Wood Kiln Construction Workshop October 15-29, 2016 at Tabor Cottage, near Butler, Ohio BRUCE DEHNERT This will be a hands-on experience, building a wood-fired kiln and (if possible) firing it for the first time. If you’re interested in kiln construction, wood-firing and work well with others, this workshop is for you. Dehnert has built kilns all over the U.S. and in other countries, including the first soda kiln in China. Since receiving his MFA from Alfred University, He has taught at universities around the world, including Hunter College and Parsons School of Design in New York City, the School of Art in New Zealand, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak on the island of Borneo and UMASS Dartmouth in Massachusetts. He has been published in, among others, Studio Potter , Ceramics Monthly, Clay Times, Ceramics Art and Perception and New Zealand Potter. He has received many awards for his work, including three Fletcher Challenge International Awards, the Carnegie Premiere Prize for Works on Paper, and the 2007 New Jersey Artist Fellowship Award. Bruce is currently head of Ceramics at Peters Valley Craft Center in Layton, New Jersey. Tabor is in Ohio’s Amish country. It belongs to the Sisters of the Transfiguration and is home to two members of the Order. Please do plan to bring a half-dozen bisqued pieces to fire in the new kiln (we hope). There will be glazes you can use if you’d like. Workshop Tuition $575 for the workshop, which will last 10 days to two weeks, depending on how quickly the work goes. Participants are invited to stay in our guest house and share family style meals at no additional cost - there will be a bed for each - most rooms will be shared with one or two others, and you will need to tidy up after yourselves. For those who prefer, we are next door to a nice KOA camp. Butler and Loudonville, Ohio are both 6 or 8 miles away. For more information or to enroll contact the Sisters at hilaritas@aol.com
