Kristen will be having a Valentine Glazing event on Wednesday February 8th at 6:00 p.m. We will be glazing bisqued heart ornaments while drinking whatever elixers you love best. The glaze, hearts and studio space will be provided as well as a few delectable items to gnosh on and sip... (I will make some cupcakes and bring a case or so of beer...) “Linda Ding: Still Life.” Opening Reception 5:30-8pm. Artist talk at 7pm. Linda Ding, a graduate of The Cleveland Institute of Art (2010), uses her installations to create and heighten the physical and emotional conditions amongst two people in social situations. In the context of interior spaces, abstraction and symbolic forms are used to refer to the human. To manipulate the social space, Ding draws from the notions of intimacy and privacy to examine how interaction is a response to physical and emotional closeness. About the Artist: Linda Ding, a graduate of The Cleveland Institute of Art (2010), is currently working in Cincinnati, OH. She recently exhibited in Art in an Instant, curated by Julia Pressman, at the Thompson Gallery, The Cambridge School of Weston (MA) and in the Student Independent Exhibition, curated by Christa Donner, Dario Robleto, and Pascual Sisto, at the Reinberger Gallery (Cleveland, OH). HIs work was chosen by jurors Gregory Amenoff, Chair of the Visual Arts Division of Columbia University's School of the Arts, and Paola Morsiani, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, for the 4th and 5th iterations of the annual exhibition After the Pedestal at The Sculpture Center. Stibich has received the first place award from Cleveland Public Art in Bike Station, a public art competition (2009), and received the Bernice and David E. Davis '48 Scholarship in Sculpture from the Cleveland Institute of Art two consecutive years (2008, 2009). about the artist | Lauren Yeager. A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art (2009), Lauren Yeager actively exhibits throughout Cleveland. In Memory: Malcolm Davis 1937-2011

It may only be when learning of unanticipated loss that overwhelming sadness brushes so assuredly against reverential grace. NCECA shared such a moment with many of you when early this morning we began to receive phone calls and e-mail messages informing us of the passing of Malcolm Davis.

Dear friend, mentor and inspiration to thousands working in clay, Malcolm's life journey served as an exemplar for many who have chosen the path of the publicly engaged studio potter. As a humanitarian and potter, Malcolm somehow managed to seamlessly interweave strands of altruism, idealism, pragmatism and improvisation. He taught us what was required to lead a meaningful life as a maker, teacher and friend. In the process, he shared with us lyrical, carbon-kissed pots that came from his own hands, raised our awareness of the great works made by others, and generously gifted his knowledge, passion and love for material, process, meaningful moments and human connection. In the introduction of his closing lecture for NCECA's 2010 Conference in Philadelphia, entitled How Did I End Up Here?, Malcolm shared...

The earth binds us potters to one another; none of us are here without the other, so gratitude must be paid to this community of makers and creators... And then there is The Clay. None of us would be here today, struggling and surviving, creating and making, if it weren't for the power of the living earth that seduces, sustains and keeps us growing. Thanks to The Clay, to all those workers and makers over the millennia who paved our way.

Malcolm attended his first NCECA event when he was brand new to clay in 1979 at Penn State University. In the weeks prior to his passing, Malcolm was working and communicating with NCECA to gather information and craft presentations for the Past Masters program being planned for the 2012 conference in Seattle. Malcolm's heart and spirit will be with us, although not in the manner we had planned. All of us who had the pleasure of knowing Malcolm will sadly miss him. As we make moments to meditate on the life he so richly crafted and selflessly shared, we know that Malcolm would want us all to go to the studio, touch the clay and make contact once again with a friend.

“Porcelain: Color and Light”, will celebrate the beauty and magic of light as it accentuates color, expands form and energizes surfaces in translucent porcelain. We will discuss the unique, light transmitting characteristics of vitreous porcelain and will follow up with an exploration of techniques used to color and incorporate color and light into our artwork. Topics will include relief carving (lithophane), color additions, colored clay techniques and porcelain formulas, as we consider colored, translucent porcelain in its many manifestations; sculpture, pottery (agateware or neriagi), translucent lighting and jewelry. Mornings will be devoted to exploration---demonstrations and technical discussions aimed at unlocking mysteries, expanding knowledge and empowering creativity. Afternoons will be devoted to making. Your quiet, personal experimentation or technical guidance and assistance---whatever it takes to help you bring out the best. Message from a NOC member. There is a storage unit auction in Medina tomorrow! There are 2 kilns being auctioned. One is a Paragon TNF283. It is not new but I looked it up online and the new one sells for around $3,000. I went out to look at it. I don`t know if the computer works, there is no way to try it there. The friend of mine who owns the units said if it does`t work he will give the money back. The bricks are pretty good and the coils don`t look worn. There are also hundreds of molds with mold straps and another smaller kiln that is not in very good shape. The molds look like hobby molds from a store but there are some really big ones and it is so crowded that it was hard to see them. There is also alot of metal shelving. The auction is Thurs, Nov. 3 at 10:00 at Bob`s Storage on Rt 18 west of Medina.

SODA FIRING WORKSHOPS 2011

HILL POTTERY WILNO, ON.

May 14^th & 15^th - July 16^th & 17^th – October 22^nd & 23^rd

These 2 day workshops hosted by Potter Dan Hill will focus on how the movement of flame and Soda-Vapour in the atmospheric kiln can be used to enhance clay and surfaces and breathe life into your pots.

Workshop group size will be 8 - 12 participants. Each participant will bring 6 – 10 bisque fired pots of various sizes for the firing. The clay bodies used should be ^6 stoneware (low iron body) or porcelain. Dan uses Mid-white stoneware and 6-50 porcelain from Tuckers and 910 porcelain from PSH to good effect.

The Workshop will include glazing and decorating, strategic placement of pots in the down-draft kiln, firing and introducing Soda into the kiln as well as discussions and demonstrations about the processes and aesthetics involved.

Cost for the 2 days is $175.00 plus a $25.00 materials fee. $200.00 in total.

Dans' studio/showroom is located near the picturesque village of Wilno which is nestled in the hills of the beautiful Madawaska Valley region in eastern Ont. Canada. The Wilno area has excellent restaurants, B&Bs, guest houses, and motels as well as 2 galleries. The Madawaska Valley region is known for its’ vibrant artistic community and many opportunities for outdoor adventures. Wilno is located 2 hours drive West of Ottawa on Hwy 60 and 2 hours 15 minutes north of Peterborough near Barrys Bay.

We have two ceramic positions open in our department. My senior colleague, Gail Kendall, is retiring and we are conducting a search for a full-time tenure-track position in ceramics. In addition, our department chair is also retiring from that position and I'm taking that job for two years. We plan on hiring a full-time non-tenure track Assistant Professor of Practice to teach my undergraduate classes (I'm going to continue working with our ceramics grad program). “The 26th Annual Fine Print Fair.” Cleveland’s largest and most comprehensive exhibition of fine prints, begins Friday, September 24, 2010 with an opening night benefit preview and continues Saturday, September 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday, September 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Corporate College located at 4400 Richmond Road in Warrensville Heights (at I-271). The Fine Print Fair benefits the Department of Prints at the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) and is sponsored by the Print Club of Cleveland, a non-profit adjunct organization dedicated to supporting the museum’s print collection. Don Pilcher studied with the greats in ceramics. He made a successful living for himself teaching and reached national acclaim as an artist. Then he chucked it all; eventually reinventing himself as the illustrious "Georgette Ore" and other unique marketing personas…and he/she’s been going strong ever since. Don will speak on his reinvented life and career. You won’t want to miss his humorous insights.

Bill Brouillard recently received the Cleveland Arts Prize Lifetime Achievement Award and he’s still got plenty of life to lead. His recent works reference traditions of Majolica work and palace art pots. “With humor, whimsy and machine age technology”, Bill injects familiar objects into the decorative/commemorative object. Join Bill in his journey with culture and technology.

Jack Earl has had a long and remarkable career. Inspired by early porcelain figures, Jack has developed this off-beat, humorous and narrative style of portraying figures from his adventures in rural Ohio. “I want my work to reflect life. The more of life the viewer can know and feel from viewing the piece, the more successful the piece is”. Learn more from a master.

Gail Russell established Peachblow Pottery in 1986 and has been working in porcelain for most of her 35 years in ceramics. Gail produces reduction fired, high temperature, functional porcelain wares that are influenced by Asian forms and glazes, and of course, the natural world of Ohio. Enjoy what Gail has to share.

Voices Worth Hearing, Art Worth Sharing, an innovative multimedia exhibit that will premiere in the Gordon Square Arts District in June. Award-winning photographers Steve Cagan, Donald Black Jr., and Gabriel Gonzalez were each embedded in the daily lives and experiences of three local refugee families, capturing their joys, challenges and transplanted cultures on film. The result will be revealed in a black-and-white photography exhibit on display at Wall Eye Gallery, 5304 Detroit Ave., June 18-20 (continuing June 25-27). The premiere weekend also includes a companion video documentary by Emmy-winning video producers Bob Becker and Luanne Bole-Becker, along with multicultural food and displays. Manabigama Wood Kiln Workshop in Perrysburg, Ohio

The 577 Foundation is pleased to host a wood kiln building workshop on
our grounds from May 15 until May 23rd (no class on May 22nd), 2010. We
will be building a Manabigama Wood Kiln with John Thies and Bill van
Gilder as our presenters for the workshop. The workshop participants
will help build the kiln as well as be able to put pots in the inaugural
firing at the end of the workshop week! We just recently had an opening
in the workshop, which had been filled for several months, so this is a
great opportunity to be apart of an incredible kiln building experience.

We Are Mountains, a new solo exhibit by Dana Oldfather, illustrates the weight of one’s natural emotional contradictions through a range of experiences; an accomplished existence can nonetheless be consumed with doubt and uncertainty. Her abstract wonderlands are skillful and balanced while her amoebic figures are on a transcendental journey from past to present. Each thoughtful piece gracefully embodies the revelation of contesting aspirations in an ambiguous arrangement of paths and shapes. Beginning her career as a figurative realist painter, Dana has since loosened her hand and expanded into the realm of abstraction. Contrarily organized and layered, each piece is inspired by nature, culture and resolution. With a focus on innocence, individuality, and consumption, and by employing contrasting metaphorical and magnified pointillist elements, Dana connects to the world through beauty. The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) is soliciting public artists for submission of public art for the University Circle Rapid Transit Station. The station is one of the top four major transit hubs within the GCRTA public transit network. It serves 6-8 busy bus routes, is close to the HealthLine Bus Rapid Transit service, and is a major station on the RTA's Red Line running from East Cleveland to Cleveland Hopkins Airport. Given this amount of activity, the station is composed of several different elements all designed with a common architectural theme. The station is meant to be an iconic gateway to the Region, the City of Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, and into University Circle. Its proximity to historic Rockefeller and Ambler Park, Case Western Reserve University and a major urban arterial carrying 30,000 cars per day, combine to create a unique setting for this station.

Lakeland has one of the largest exhibition/gallery spaces in the county. I am so excited to see the artists and their creations. I look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new (to me) and emerging artists.
In an attempt to "Go Green" and save money on sending out applications to a mailing list that is not artist based... I am emailing my contacts and artists the information and asking them to "pass it on". The entry fees will fund the awards. The more artworks that are submitted= larger (and more) prizes.

I chose 2 other jurors, along with myself, to judge the artworks and award cash prizes and honorable mention certificates.
Marcia Hall is the Gallery Director for Bonfoey Gallery in Cleveland. Area artists aspire to be included in Bonfoey's collection. Marcia has worked at Bonfoey's for over 30 years. (www.bonfoey.com). Christy Gray is the Project Manager for the Red Dot Project and is also a fiber artist. (Reddotproject.org). I bring to the table over 30 years of Gallery experience: gallery manager Sylvia Ullman's American Crafts Gallery (the largest gallery collection between New York City and Chicago) in Cleveland, Owner,Creative Director and Exhibition Curator of The Gallery: Fine Art and Contemporary Crafts Gallery in Chagrin Falls, Assistant Director and Gallery Curator at the Valley Art Center in Chagrin Falls before landing at Lakeland. I am also a fiber artist/textile designer. Together we have accumulated over 80 years of experience.
