“SPACES Becomes The Convention and Visitors Bureau (for a while).” Opening Reception 6-9pm. The Convention and Visitors Bureau is the new series of exhibitions & events from 5/11-7/13/12 organized by SPACES offering an alternative view of our town as a tourist destination, featuring artists such as Alison Pebworth (SPACES artist-in-residence from SF), Temporary Travel Office of Chicago, and The Think Tank That Has Yet To Be Named from Philadelphia & Iowa City. Also producing work this month is the anonymous collective Cleveland SGS, also artists-in-residence, and the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative, both from Cleveland. “Photo Orgy! One Night Only!” 5:30 – 9pm. Local rock photogs Maureen Gray and Janet Macoska are hosting a one night pop-up shop, blow-out, photo orgy, exhibition called Crawling From the Wreckage @ Grays Auctioneers. They’ve been everywhere photographing rock stars and now you can see their work and purchase your own prints for $50/piece. Music, drink & munchies provided. More: Janet Macoska and Mo Gray have survived and succeeded as women photographers in a rock and roll world dominated by men, drugs, alcohol and debauchery. ‘Crawling From The Wreckage’ explores nearly four decades of rock and roll photography from two Cleveland-born women rock and roll photographers whose work has been presented in publications all over the world, on cds, in books and in galleries and museums. “Dark Matter, New work by Robert Thurmer.” Opening 6 – 10pm. Renowned local artist Robert Thurmer wants to explore how we recognize art objects. He’ll do just that in Dark Matter, his new exhibit @ Arts Collinwood. “Specifically: what are the markers for ‘art object’ that are generally recognized without specialized privileged information. To explore these ideas, I started making these recent sculptures in an attempt to make my own ‘found’ art, what I like to call paraphrastic objects – stand-ins that refer to certain kinds of conventional art objects.” View his sculptures — which embody an exploration of this theme — through Sun 6/4. Ohio Craft Museum Due to popular demand, we’re offering a third session of this workshop! Join Kathleen Dlabick, Ohio Designer Craftsmen’s graphic designer and photographer, as she presents tips and pointers for photographing your work. Learn how to create professional-looking shots for online marketing, sales and fair applications. You’ll discover what kind of equipment you need, how to light your shots and more. You’ll learn how to tackle photography challenges, and determine when it’s time to call a professional. Kathleen Dlabick has been working as ODC’s graphic designer, photographer and webmaster since September of 2010. She has over 25 years of experience as a photographer, including 17 years at the Columbus Dispatch and eight years in the bio-medical field. Before the workshop, visit the museum gallery to see the spring exhibition, Best of 2012. This workshop is open to artists of all levels, and costs $12 for members of ODC, $15 for non-members.
