She uses clay as a medium to sculpt personal but open-ended narratives about women’s lives that often veer into the fantastical, whimsical and even humorous, drawing on popular culture and fairy-tale imagery.  Her work has been seen around Cleveland at galleries such as the former William Busta Gallery., as well as in Columbus, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Banff, Alberta. He says the piece, titled “Treesure House,” will address cycles of decay and regrowth, such as what’s going on in the North Collinwood neighborhood. The 4th Skull and Skeleton in Art … Folk Art to Pop Culture exhibit at the gallery at Lakeland Community College has gotten to be a huge undertaking. Curated by gallery coordinator Mary Urbas, it’s exploded in size from 18 artists to more than 80 from across the country as well as England and Mexico, with more than 300 works in virtually every media you can name.

2731 Prospect, 2731 Prospect Ave., Cleveland 216.298.9071 “Joseph Minek and Amber Stucke.”  Opening 6-9pm.   The second pair of shows at 2731 Prospect demonstrates the direction new gallery director Lauren Davis said they were interested in going. They’ve got another show of photography, something Busta didn’t do much of, and they’re casting a wider regional net. Clevelander Joseph Minek does abstract works created in the darkroom without a camera, while Cincinnati-based artist Amber Stucke will be showing graphite drawings of lichen, fungi, algae and moss in her show Symbiosis State, which “investigate the complex visual relationships between survival, both parasitic and mutualistic, that take place under symbiosis.”

Morgan Conservatory, 1754 E. 47^th Street, Cleveland, 216.361.9255, www.morganconservatory.org   “Buoyancy.”  Opening 6-9PM.  Buoyancy, the Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory’s last gallery show of the year, addresses the theme of water and swimming in the work of two artists, Aimee Lee and Kristen Martincic.  Both grew up around water — Martincic in Cleveland, Lee along New York’s Hudson River — and it has played an influential role in their work. Both ground their work in different forms of Asian papermaking (Lee led the launch of Morgan’s eastern Paper studio last year), which they use to create prints, mixed-media work and three-dimensional objects.  The show opens with a reception Thu 10/15 from 6-9pm, with an artist talk by both artists at 6pm. It runs through Sat 12/5. It’s free.

It originated in farm work. If a group of field hands is busy and bent over picking crops, then a supervisor looking out over the group would see nothing but "assholes and elbows".  I grew up on a farm in Medina, Ohio with eight siblings. There were always daily chores and tasks we each had to do. My father would always say "Get out there and do your chores and all I want to see is assholes and elbows."

He co-founded the Collective Arts Network and is publisher/editor of the quarterly CAN Journal.  But he’s also an accomplished printmaker and creator of artist books. He’s got a new show opening and it will feature a selection of prints from his brand-new artist book of woodcuts, A Pocket Full of Change, which shows and tells the story of a boy who goes out on his bicycle  to put coins on tracks to be run over by trains. 

Derek Hess Gallery at &8^th Street Studios.  “Gojira: An Artistic Celebration of Godzilla.”  Opening 5-9PM.  More than two dozen mostly local artists are contributing their talents to Gojira: An Artistic Celebration of Godzilla, including Hess himself, as well as others known for their pop culture sensibility such as Rich Cihlar, John Greiner, Jake Kelly, Aaron Sechrist and Clay Parker. Those contributions include drawing, painting, sculpture and even handmade books.

The Cleveland Museum of Art’s monthly first Friday over-18 meet-and-mingle event MIX has an Italian flavor this month. Dubbed Cultura, it will shine the spotlight on the Italian works in its collection, from ancient Rome through the Renaissance classics to Italy’s lively contemporary art scene. Italian-style food will be available at the museum’s Provenance restaurant and café, and to make it even more accessible, there’ll be a pop-up Provenance restaurant in the atrium. Lynne Lofton (NOC’s Own) got into the Zanesville Show with the piece in the above image!  Congrats!  The Muskingum County Community Foundation (MCCF), the Zanesville Museum of Art and the Artist Colony of Zanesville, with support from the Ohio Arts Council, are partnering with the Potters Council, the membership organization of ceramists worldwide, to present the Zanesville Prize for Contemporary Ceramics, the largest best of show prize in ceramics in the Western Hemisphere.   From over 950 works submitted by 368 artists, 65 works (from 58 artists) were selected as finalists to be exhibited in Zanesville.  From those finalists the jurors will choose the Zanesville Prize recipient and the other award recipients. The three jurors are Garth Johnson, Curator of Ceramics, Arizona State University Art Museum in Tempe; Julia Galloway, Professor & Director, School of Art, University of Montana in Missoula; and Doug Jeck, Associate Professor & Chair, School of Art, University of Washington in Seattle.  The 2015 Zanesville Prize for Contemporary Ceramics show will be held at the Zanesville Museum of Art fromSeptember 25, 2015 through January 2, 2016.  Also there is a one-day conference in Zanesville on September 26, with demonstrations by the three Zanesville Prize Jurors.   Public viewing of the show (September 25, 2015 – January 2, 2016)

Gallery One Sixty, 16008 Waterloo Road, Cleve.  “Jake Kelly.”  Opening 6PM.  Cleveland artist Jake Kelly first attracted notice with his flyers for concerts at venues like the Grog Shop and the Beachland, which started appearing around town 15 years ago.  His intricate line drawings, looking like single panels pulled from a comic strip, appeared to depict moments from a larger narrative that was titillatingly elusive. Sometimes it had something — usually tenuous — to do with the band in question but often it was its own thing, telling some unsettling, often macabre tale whose backstory you had to fill in yourself.

Eagle Collection This exhibit features 85 objects by 50 artists – ceramics, fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry and works on paper – acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.   Some of the artists included are:  Olga deAmaral, Robert Arneson, Viola Frey, Sam Maloof, Richard Marquis, Albert Paley, Ken Price, Peter Voulkos, Paul Soldner…to just name a few.  The Eagle Collection highlights important studio objects made from the mid- 1960s to the 2000s with a focus on the 1960s – 80s, the collection’s great strength.

The exhibition consists of works from the collections of AAWR and ARTneo, emphasizing Butnik's ability to capture the feeling of the landscape throughout his career in a variety of styles. From his early landscapes painted during World War II, to his sketches from his European travels and his large abstract canvases, Butnik referenced both physical journeys as well as psychological and transcendental explorations. Samuel Butnik's work was, in his own words, a “realization of new experiences.”

Heights Art Gallery, 2175 Lee Road  Cleveland Hts., 216.371.3457 www.heightsarts.org  When the Heights Bicycle Coalition contacted Heights Arts former executive director Peggy Spaeth about leading a summer bicycle ride—based on public art tours found in cities such as Chicago and San Francisco—her response was an enthusiastic “YES.” Instead of talking and riding at the same time, however, the initial idea has evolved into a dynamic duo of events: an illustrated public art talk at Heights Arts’ newly renovated gallery on Thursday, August 20 at 7 p.m. and a separate bicycle tour on Saturday, August 22 from 10 a.m. to noon. The hour-long illustrated talk on August 20 will also highlight the four temporary art projects that are no longer on view. Both events are free and open to the public. Because seating is limited in the gallery, please RSVP for the talk by calling 216-371-3457. The bike tour will meet at the mini-park adjacent to the Heights Arts gallery, 2175 Lee Road in Cleveland Heights. Helmets are mandatory. A rain date has been set for Sunday, August 23 at 1:30 p.m.

Destruction of Form isn’t about new or found photography — it’s about deconstructing one piece of art and creating another. This exhibition & collaboration by Shari Wilkins and American Emotionalist artist  John W. Carlson, brought to you by the Cleveland Print Room, challenges viewers’ perceptions by altering the photographers’ original intent.  “We’ve altered the original photograph’s premise,” said Carlson. “It may be presumptuous of me to know the purpose of the photo, but when the premise of the photo is destroyed it becomes an entirely new piece of art. A lot of this is about perception.”

Opening at e11even two gallery at 78^th!  “Cleveland Artists Lonely art Club Show.” We will premiere a huge collaboration piece by 33 local artists celebrating The Beatles and their Sgt. Pepper era. The final piece is enormous in size and an absolute visual treat. On top of the main attraction each participating artist created a second piece inspired by a different track off of the Sgt. Pepper album. Another reason to come down will be to see the grand opening of our new expansion gallery. E11even 2 just became that much bigger! Cleveland-based photographer Brandon Juhasz takes on the online world’s re-contextualization of photography and real life in IRL, opening at the Maria Neil Art Project on Waterloo.
