Alex
Kraft's Enriching the
Surface: Monoprinting workshop 9 am – Noon. Alex creates
evocative surfaces through her use of brightly colored glazes and decorative
techniques that include slip trailing, mishima, image transfer, non-fired
techniques and other decorative treatments. Participants will learn how to create surface designs in
reverse on paper. You will transfer these hidden images to clay using a
monoprinting technique. Attendees will incorporate the use of simple tarpaper
templates to create hand-built forms. And you will leave with a small example
that you will have created.
Calvin Ma “Homebody
Sculptures.” workshop 1 pm – 4
pm. Calvin
Ma's work focuses on the narratives of his struggles with social anxiety and
also examines the role of toys not only as art, but also as mechanisms to cope
with his anxieties. During his workshop, Calvin will be demonstrating his
process of constructing one of his Homebody heads involving slip casting,
altering and texturing. Focused heavily on applying textures before the firing
process, Calvin will present how he achieves different surface treatments using
various types of tools. If time allows, Calvin will also demonstrate the
underglazing techniques he uses to achieve the wood-like finishes. Utilizing
the action figure form in his sculptural work, Calvin explores personal issues
and struggles with social anxiety. Calvin taps into a childlike sense of
exploration and storytelling through his work. (Image Above)

Wood Kiln
Construction Workshop October 15-29, 2016 at Tabor Cottage, near Butler, Ohio.
Carol Ohl has taken down her old wood kiln and the bricks will be
used to build a new kiln! BRUCE
DEHNERT will be leading the kiln construction workshop. This will be a hands-on experience,
building a wood-fired kiln and (if possible) firing it for the first time. If
you’re interested in kiln construction, wood-firing and work well with others,
this workshop is for you. Workshop
Tuition $575 for the workshop, which will last 10 days to two weeks, depending
on how quickly the work goes. Participants are invited to stay in our
guesthouse and share family style meals at no additional cost - there will be a
bed for each - most rooms will be shared with one or two others. Please do plan
to bring a half-dozen bisqued pieces to fire in the new kiln (we hope). There
will be glazes you can use if you’d like. For those who prefer, we are next
door to a nice KOA camp. For
more information or to enroll contact athilaritas@aol.com
