 CALL TO ENTRY
All the information can be accessed by clicking on the link on the Art Gallery Homepage:

                                                 www.lakelandcc.edu/gallery

Lakeland has one of the largest exhibition/gallery spaces in the county. I am so excited to see the artists and their creations. I look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new (to me) and emerging artists.
In an attempt to "Go Green" and save money on sending out applications to a mailing list that is not artist based... I am emailing my contacts and artists the information  and asking them to "pass it on". The entry fees will fund the awards. The more artworks that are submitted= larger (and more) prizes.

I chose 2 other jurors, along with myself, to judge the artworks and award cash prizes and honorable mention certificates.
Marcia Hall is the Gallery Director for Bonfoey Gallery in Cleveland. Area artists aspire to be included in Bonfoey's collection. Marcia has worked at Bonfoey's for over 30 years. (www.bonfoey.com). Christy Gray is the Project Manager for the Red Dot Project and is also a fiber artist. (Reddotproject.org). I bring to the table over 30 years of Gallery experience: gallery manager Sylvia Ullman's American Crafts Gallery (the largest gallery collection between New York City and Chicago) in Cleveland, Owner,Creative Director and Exhibition Curator of The Gallery: Fine Art and Contemporary Crafts Gallery in Chagrin Falls, Assistant Director and Gallery Curator at the Valley Art Center in Chagrin Falls before landing at Lakeland. I am also a fiber artist/textile designer. Together  we have accumulated over 80 years of experience.

Mud Masters!

Mud Masters Symposium

July 17, 2010

Join us for this full day workshop with Ohio's finest ceramic artists...

Keynote Speaker: Don Pilcher
Lectures/Demonstrations by: Bill Brouillard, Jack Earl, Gail Russell
Gallery Visit: Form, Function & Figure Exhibition
Don Pilcher studied with the greats in ceramics. He made a successful living for himself teaching and reached national acclaim as an artist. Then he chucked it all; eventually reinventing himself as the illustrious "Georgette Ore" and other unique marketing personas…and he/she’s been going strong ever since. Don will speak on his reinvented life and career. You won’t want to miss his humorous insights.

Bill Brouillard recently received the Cleveland Arts Prize Lifetime Achievement Award and he’s still got plenty of life to lead. His recent works reference traditions of Majolica work and palace art pots. “With humor, whimsy and machine age technology”, Bill injects familiar objects into the decorative/commemorative object. Join Bill in his journey with culture and technology.
Jack Earl has had a long and remarkable career. Inspired by early porcelain figures, Jack has developed this off-beat, humorous and narrative style of portraying figures from his adventures in rural Ohio. “I want my work to reflect life. The more of life the viewer can know and feel from viewing the piece, the more successful the piece is”. Learn more from a master.
Gail Russell established Peachblow Pottery in 1986 and has been working in porcelain for most of her 35 years in ceramics. Gail produces reduction fired, high temperature, functional porcelain wares that are influenced by Asian forms and glazes, and of course, the natural world of Ohio. Enjoy what Gail has to share.

Friday March 19th Openings

Friday Openings

Give Your hART to Haiti Score art from the best artists 'round town and help the people of Haiti on Fri 3/19. This silent auction will feature works by Hector Vega, Derek Hess and Kent Smith, Judy Brandon and other creative folk. Plus, treats from Lucky's Cafe and other hot spots and entertainment by Hot Carl and other amusing folk. Undomesticated @ Wall Eye Gallery Knitting, sewing, crocheting and other forms of crafting were once considered "women's work"--something all women needed to learn. Even though crafting isn't a necessity today (and is certainly not considered "women's work"), many ladies still find solace at the click of needles or seated at a sewing machine. In Undomesticated, several local women artists "honor this heritage through modern interpretations of necessity-driven set of skills as a means of artistic expression." The exhibit opens w/ an artist reception on Fri 3/19 from 6-11PM @ Wall Eye Gallery, 5304 Detroit Ave

Saturday Openings

The Ink Well/ Happy Hour @ Pop Shop Two shows opening at the Pop Shop/(art)ificial Gallery on Sat 3/20: The Ink Well features the work of dozens of local tattooists--on paper, not skin. Next door, Happy Hour showcases work by Patch Whisky, who creates a playful array of monsters and creatures enjoying the finer things in life--like happy hour. Both exhibits open 6-9PM @ 17020 Madison Ave in Lakewood.

Space Invaders 2010 SPACES Gallery asks, Have you ever visited a museum or gallery and found some of the work hard to grasp? Has a painting or piece of installation art ever approached you on the beach and kicked sand in your face, just to run off with your girlfriend? Space Invaders is an open critique of what you see. Hash out what's good--or what's confusing--about a piece of art. Invasions happen in museums all over Cle. SPACES is the site of the first invasion, happenin' on Sat 3/20 from 2-4PM.

Next Wednesday

Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition @ UA Sculpture doesn't have to be cumbersome. The 10th Int'l Shoebox Exhibition features works by 81 artists from over 14 countries who created work no larger than an ordinary shoebox. See the artists' various creative responses to such strict size restrictions when the exhibit opens on Wed 3/24 at 4:30PM. Stephen Litchfield, associate prof at KSU, will discuss the show at 6PM @ Myers School of Art at the Univ of Akron, 150 E Exchange St.

Studio space needed

A friend of mine, Sawsan Alhaddad, an artist and anesthesiologist, is trying to help an Iraqi artist who just immigrated to the US 3 months ago get started in Cleveland. Ahmed Gareeb paints, sculpts and does ceramics. He is in the process of learning English , has few financial resources and would like to share space so he can begin to do some work. Sawsan brought Ahmed to see the studio at CSU and introduce him to Dick Schneider. He would be eligible to take a class next fall. I was wondering whether you know of anyone who might have a work space that he might use. He lives on the Westside. An Iraqi architect Adil Altaei who is well settled and speaks good English and lives in the same area as Ahmed,  has been helping him also. Ahmed Gareeb's CV and images of his work are on the following website: www.AhmedGareeb.com

If you know of any studio space or have any other suggestions please forward them to Sawsan Alhaddad [sawsanalhaddad@yahoo.com] and or to me.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Asterisk Gallery Proudly Presents: "Referential – Homage, Montage, Sabotage" (Videos based on other artworks) curated by Cynthia Penter Opening Reception March 12, 6 - 11pm
Referential: Homage. Montage. Sabotage. will be an exhibition of video loops based on an original artwork from another medium. The show is being curated and organized by Cynthia Penter, a local media artist, with the assistance of Dana Depew, the gallery’s owner. “I asked a group of artists to make a short looping video about a master artwork or artist which they either love or hate. I wanted their response to the artwork and to see them transform the originating piece into the medium of video, displayed appropriately for a gallery experience. I wanted to see the 2D and 3D art brought to life.” The artists have been encouraged to treat the work with any approach they desire. The 30 artists invited to participate included students, former students, and friends of Penter, as well as video artists from other states. All were invited based on previous work and to share in what Penter hopes will be a fun and engaging art experience. show runs through April 3, 2010 hrs by appt 330-304-8528 www.asteriskgallery.com
