78^th Street Studios. 1300 West 78^th Street, Cleveland “Third Fridays @78thStStudios.”  Open 5pm.  It’s another busy Third Friday at 78^th Street Studios.  For the Love of Art is the latest exhibition of E11even 2’s founders – Rich Cihlar, Billy Naininger and Christina Sadowski.  Instead of a typical Valentine’s-themed show, the artists explore the various meanings of the word “love.”  Tregoning & Company presents the opening of Moe Brooker’s first Cleveland exhibition in 19 years.  Brooker is a former professor at Cleveland Institute of Art, as well as a recipient of the Cleveland Arts Prize.  HEDGE Gallery opens Lines+Folds – featuring the work of David Masters, Christine Mauersberger, Grace Summanen and Zach Whitehurst.  Friday is also your last chance to check out a number of shows – including SYZYGY at Cleveland West Art League, Behind the Curtain at Forum Art Space, Mixed Geometry at Survival Kit (featuring live music by Jenna Fournier and Joey Beltram) and Director’s Choice at Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery.  There are also a number of other open studios and events going on all evening.   Don’t miss February’s Third Friday!

Negative Space.  3820 Superior Ave., 2nd Floor, Cleveland.  “Scott Alan Evans-Photography.”  Opening 6pm. 6pm.  Local artist Scott Alan Evans’ latest collection of photographs are meant to evoke a meditative experience.  Milksang Visions is a collection of “contemplative photography” opening this weekend at Negative Space gallery in Asian Town Center.  This exhibition will feature new work, as well as photos from his previous series – Natural Timbre and Earth Under Sky.  These photos document the rich, natural landscape of Northeast Ohio.  The beauty in these photos is the beauty all around us.  If that’s not worth celebrating, we don’t know what is.

Cleveland Institute of Art, 11141 East Blvd, Cleveland, 216.421.7407, www.cia.edu “CIA Student Independent Exhibition.”  Opening 6pm.  For 68 years, Cleveland Institute of Art’s annual Student Independent Exhibition has showcased the finest work by its students.  The show offers viewers a glimpse at the future of Contemporary Art, as students explore the “Who, What, Where, When, Why and How” of themselves, their society and their time.  “CIA’s Student Independent Exhibition is always a great show because it’s a celebration of student art that is organized by students,” says CIA President Grafton Nunes.  “So it’s unpredictable, never stale, often quirky, and some of the work asks very challenging questions about our culture and our priorities.”

“Tremont Artwalk.”  Opening 6pm.  Love is in the air in Tremont for February’s Art Walk.  Doubting Thomas presents their annual Stupid Cupid group show – featuring over 30 local artists creating new, original Valentine’s and anti-Valentine’s Day greeting cards.  A limited edition set of their reproduced cards will be available at Friday’s opening reception, but be sure to stop by early — they’re sure to sell out early.  Brandt gallery hosts TWO YODYS – a special father/daughter exhibition by Rebecca and Thomas Yody.  DJ Librarian will be playing in the gallery as well.  The Gallery of Dick Russell will host an art party featuring a DJ and celebrity Valentine bartenders.  LOOP showcases the art of Kyle McCarty, and the Beck Center for the Arts’ Tremont satellite location presents the photography of Darrelle Anne Centuori.  Please see the Art Walk website for a complete list of special events.  Don’t miss this special Valentine’s Day Art Walk!

Loren Naji Studio Gallery 2138 W. 25^th Street, Cleveland www.lorennaji.com  and Gallery One Sixty, 16008 Waterloo Road, Cleveland.  “East Meets West.”  Opening 6pm. East Meets West is a unique, collaborative exhibition between Loren Naji’s Studio Gallery in Ohio City and Bryon Miller’s Gallery One Sixty in Collinwood’s Waterloo Arts District.  Nine of Cleveland’s own artists will have work at both spaces for this unusual event.  East Meets West is an effort to help unite Northeast Ohio and dissolve the artificial barriers between East, West and South in our region. By coming together for important common goals, we become more influential politically, socially and economically on a national level.  While the art in this exhibition is not specifically Cleveland-themed, this event is a celebration of our mutual home.

Spaces, 2220 Superior Viaduct, Cleveland 216.621.2314 www.spacesgallery.org  “Lauren Herzak-Bauman:  Field and Migiwa Orimo:  Visit/Revisit.”  Opening 6 pm.  Lauren Herzak-Bauman’s Field (Image ABove) includes thousands of similar porcelain pieces.  Her use of the material’s characteristics examines the media and medium themselves, while her repetition of form raises questions of individuality, modern-day consumerism and the production of contemporary ceramics.  Field is also an introspective, personal examination of the artist’s own relationship with life and death.  These works are placed directly on the gallery floor – not on a pedestal, stage or platform.  This puts the work directly in your space, dissipating the subconscious line between viewer and object.  The work’s neutral, raw finish creates a timeless style that focuses the viewer’s attention on the individual and collective forms and each piece’s unique characteristics.  Field is a meditative experience that forces you to look closer at your environment. Migiwa Orimo’s Visit/Revisit is more of a reflection on the artist’s recent experiences in local homes.  During a recent residency as one of SPACES World Artists Program (SWAP) artists, Orimo completely embedded and immersed herself in the homes and lives of Cleveland families.  Her work explores how our objects, environment and possessions reflect our memories. At SPACES, Orimo’s Visit/Revisit is an installation incorporating relics from her experiences.  The work is successful in collapsing the boundaries between public and private spaces, as well as the parts of ourselves which we share openly and keep intimately private.   The psychological questions raised by this work create a fertile environment for an active, transcendental viewing experience.

One of the most provocative and thoughtful artists of our time, Hank Willis Thomas sees his work in photography, video, and installation as an opportunity to address issues of race and identity as approached in advertising and popular culture. The artist first spoke in Cleveland in 2012 and returns to discuss his latest work and collaborative projects on the occasion of his solo show Hank Willis Thomas, on view through March 9 in the museum’s photography gallery and through March 8 at Transformer Station.

West 78^th Street Studios, 1300 W. 78^th Street, Cleveland “Cleveland Bazaar.”  Sat 12/14 @ 10am – 9pm.  Sun 12/15 @ 10am – 6pm.  78th Street Studios hosts two exciting, pop-up holiday markets Sat 12/14 – Sun 12/15.  The Cleveland Bazaar (formerly known as Bazaar Bizarre) is Northeast Ohio’s longest running indie craft show.  Just a few flights of stairs above this weekend’s Cleveland Bazaar at 78^th Street Studios, Survival Kit presents a special Holiday Edition of the 4^th Coast POP UP Market.  This weekend-long event is devoted to local, independent artisans.  The eclectic show will offer jewelry, handmade clothing, vintage items and more!  In addition, most of the building’s art galleries and studios will be open.  Spend the day/evening shopping throughout the whole building.
