Zygote Press, 1410 East 30^th St., Cleveland 216.621.2900  www.zygotepress.com “Mail Art : Show + Film Screening.”  Opening 6pm.  The latest exhibition at Zygote Press highlights a very special group of artists who make handmade mail art. In an increasingly fast-paced, impersonal world, talented “pen pals” from all across the world are sending each other these one-of-a-kind creations. One might feel compelled to refer to them as “postcards,” but once you’ve seen them for yourself, you’ll see they are much more than that.  In 2012, Cleveland-native Michael Polk created a documentary about his high school classmate Amber Esner and her nationwide network of mail artists. This may sound familiar to some of you because Waterloo Arts hosted Making Mail (featuring a film screening and exhibition of mail art) this past winter. In fact, Zygote’s own Liz Maugans connected Polk with Waterloo Arts for the initial exhibition.  Esner is a recent graduate of Cleveland Institute of Art, and is curating this exhibition in collaboration with her friends at Zygote Press. The show will include original mail art, a screening of the documentary and more.  “Mail Art : Show + Film Screening is an exhibition based around the documentary Making Mail directed by Michael Polk,” explains Esner.

The NEW NOW is a competitive all media showcase of the best art of the 16 counties of the Western Reserve. This juried biannual exhibition is modeled after the Cleveland Museum of arts May show and hopes to attract the best talent in Northeast Ohio. AAWR has partnered with Tri C's Eastern Campus to present this show in Gallery East, a beautiful 3,000 sq foot gallery space seen by 1,000 visitors a month. The gallery can easily accommodate artwork of almost any size including large paintings, installation, and sculpture. She has published and lectured extensively on the art of the 20th century and is eager to see the regional art that Ohio has to offer. This show is presented by the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve in partnership with Cuyahoga Community College and supported by Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, and the Ohio Arts Council.

78^th Street Studios. 1300 West 78^th Street, Cleveland  “Art Fur Animals-10^th Anniversary.”  Open 7-10pm. Cleveland’s funnest benefit hits 10 this year. Combining two of many people’s favorite things — art and animals — with an affordable ticket price, Friends of the Cleveland Kennels’ Art Fur Animals has been packing in the crowds now for a decade.  Taking place again at the 78th Street Studios, the event will feature all the elements attendees have come to know and love: the ceramic dogs creatively painted by area artists sold at the end of the evening in a live auction; the paintings, prints, photos, jewelry, and other contributions from artists and area merchants available in the silent auction; and of course, a room packed with animal lovers — and even, usually, a few dogs.  This year’s Art Fur Animals will feature a limited edition commemorative print by local artist/animal lover Derek Hess, music from DJ Funk Schway, and channel 19 reporter Dawn Kendrick as emcee. It’ll also have a batch of celebrity bartenders including the Burning River Roller Girls.Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door, which includes light appetizers and two drink tickets. New this year is the $100 V.I.P. ticket, which also offers special appetizers and bar service in a private lounge, a souvenir glass, and a 6pm auction preview.

All over the region, neighbors are coming together to combine their efforts and resources to make a bigger and more immediate impact on their neighborhoods. Art District (M.A.D.) This weekend, the business owners of Lakewood’s Madison (Avenue) are working together to host their very first M.A.D. Art Walk. The Art Walk will feature nearly 20 participating businesses – spanning from Morrison Avenue to McKinely Avenue. The afternoon includes an eclectic variety of local art, vendors, make-and-take crafts, art demonstrations, the Touch Supper food truck and more. Anyone who spends at least $20 can take their receipt to Mahall’s 20 Lanes for a free game of bowling. Highlights include a large group exhibition of local art at Good Goat Gallery, the opening reception of Where’s My Jetpack 3 at Breakneck Gallery, the grand opening of Victoria Stanbridge Photography, as well as dozens of artists and vendors inside local businesses and lined across Madison’s sidewalks (weather permitting).

Cleveland Foundation Creative Fusion artist-in-residence from Taiwan, Chin-pao Chen will be presenting the work he's been creating during his time here in Cleveland, a project he calls (some) Clevelanders.  Also opening alongside Chin's work will be an exhibition of work by talented high school students enrolled in NewBridge Cleveland's after-school photography program taught by Donald Black Jr. The students' contribution, "Through the Lens" features work that was shot predominantly in the Flats and University Circle. The students then made digital negatives of their work and made prints from these negatives in the darkroom.

Loren Naji Studio Gallery 2138 W. 25^th Street, Cleveland www.lorennaji.com  On Friday evening, the gallery will host the Summer Issue Launch Party for CAN (Collective Arts Network) Journal. It will also serve as a closing reception for Undercurrent, the exhibition that was raided during its opening reception earlier this month – featuring work by Ron Copeland, Steve Ehret and Bob Peck.  Saturday night, the gallery hosts Drawn & Quartered VI – a life drawing competition featuring collectives of artists from all over the region. This year Naji will be joining a new group, The West Side Markers, to compete against Dr. Sketchy Cleveland, The Pretentious Tremont Artists of the Literary Café, the Northern Ohio Illustrator Society (NOIS) and The Murray Hill Life Drawing Group. The five groups will compete against each other (and the clock) by drawing live models in the gallery. You might just have the opportunity to participate as a model during one of the sessions.

6626 Forman Avenue, 6801 Forman Avenue and 6818 Fleet Avenue.   “Rooms to Let.”  Open 1pm.  As a child, did you ever get the impulse to draw on your walls? It’s only natural – the first signs of art in human history are cave drawings scribbled on interior walls. To artists, the world is a canvas. Developers in Slavic Village are encouraging this creative impulse with Rooms to Let: Cleveland (RTL). Local artists living in Slavic Village have been given a vacant house to decorate and/or curate as they see fit. Cleveland’s RTL is organized in conjunction with Columbus’ organizers, as well as Cleveland’s Zygote Press. Participating artists are mostly local, but some come from as far as New York and California. Artists have been working hard for weeks in preparation of Saturday’s neighborhood block party and street tour. The day will include live, local music from Todd Allen, The Wingtones and the Musmin Collective. Interactive activities will be available for guests of all ages Participating artist-curators include Barbary Bachtell, Director of Broadway School of Music & the Arts, Westleigh Harper and Michael Horton of MAKER Design Studio and local painter Scott Pickering (all of whom live in Slavic Village). Over two dozen local artists will be participaiting – including Justin Brennan, Jeff Chiplis, Dan Corrigan, Sean Kelly, Loren Naji, Cynthia Penter and many more.  In total, more than 30 artists will participate. RTL homes include 6626 Forman Avenue, 6801 Forman Avenue and 6818 Fleet Avenue.  The day’s events also include the debut of two exhibitions at two of the neighborhood’s new galleries. Just a Glimpse Gallery (3722 e.65^th Street, Cleveland, OH) will host a group show of local artists’ work, and Elevate Gallery (3675 e.65^th Street, Cleveland, OH) will debut an art installation by local artist James Jenkins.

Doubting Thomas Gallery, 856 Jefferson St., Tremont “5 in the Fifth.”   Opening 6pm.    Tremont’s Doubting Thomas Gallery isn’t a stereotypical “white cube” exhibition space. The building’s unique characteristics give it a personality unlike most commercial spaces. Sometimes the building’s character creates obstacles and complications for curators, artists and even visitors. However, the gallery’s regular cast of curators have developed strategies to take advantage of the space.  This is especially true of curator and photographer Natalia Dale – who was inspired by the gallery’s divided floorplan. Her latest exhibition, 5 in the Fifth, features 5 local female artists in each of Doubting Thomas’ five “rooms.” Participating artists include Michelle Black, Natalia Dale, Catherine Spencer, Grace Summanen and Meg Wilson.

LOOP Gallery, 2180  W. 11^th, Tremont.  “Atomist Visions Unravel.”  Opening 6-10pm. Matthew Gallagher, born 1991 is a Massachusetts native and graduate of Oberlin College’s studio art division. He is the Recipient of the 2013 AICUO Excellence in Visual Arts Grand Award as well as senatorial commendations from the state of Massachusetts and Ohio. He has exhibited works in Grid Furnishings Gallery, Sandusky Cultural Center, Richard D. Baron Gallery and the offices of Governor John Kasich among many others. His work has seen regional commercial success and hundreds of original works have been sold since 2011. Gallagher is currently a resident artist at Oberlin’s 3 Door Studios and has provided the inertia to make 3 Doors a cultural hotspot of Oberlin hosting over 50 musical performances since July 2013. When not in the visual studio, Matthew is in the audio studio working on improvised musique concrete, industrial and field recording under the Machine Listener moniker. He is looking forward to a limited edition release on Wyatt Howland's SKSK records.

Jurors:   GEORGE KOZMON, an internationally collected artist, is best known for his monumental architectural paintings, which have been widely exhibited and critically acclaimed throughout the US and abroad.  

He received his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art, and is the recipient of numerous awards, including The National Endowment For The Arts Individual Artist Fellowship, and four Ohio Arts Council Grants.  George balances studio work with exhibiting, teaching and curating, as well as being the Director of the Cain Park Arts Festival in Cleveland Hts. OH  MAGGIE GUTHRIE, was the Gallery Manager for the Northeast Ohio> Ohio Designer Craftsman Gallery at Great Northern Mall, for 15 years.  She is currently the Gallery Manager at the Don Drumm Studios & Gallery in Akron Ohio.  Over the years, she has served on the committees that accepted work into the ODC stores, so she knows Fine Crafts  Gallery Hours: Mon- Fri 9 AM - 9 PM, Sat & Sun 9 AM - 5 PM  This event and all Gallery exhibitions are free and open to the public.
