On Thursday, April 11, Hildur Ásgeirsdóttir Jónsson will install a major work at WBg.     During the past year, She has been working on a series of large paintings in partial preparation for a one-person exhibition at the Tang Museum at Skidmore College this Fall and a one-person show at the Reykjavik Art Museum in Iceland next year.  Two of these paintings were exhibited in the artist's exhibition at WBg last fall.  The painting that will be shown on April 11th is the 5th of 6 paintings.   It is similar in size to the other pieces in the series, about 10 x 14 feet.  There's a practical reason for the installation  -  the walls in the artist's studio are not large enough to hang the piece.  As each piece has been finished, she has been installing it at WBg for a day to see it and to take reference pictures.  We decided to invite patrons and friends of the gallery to see the piece as well.  On Thursday, April 11, the gallery will be open from 11 to 6.  The piece will be taken down first thing Friday morning.

Despite the obvious speed, these images appear frozen in a quite timeless space, thus revealing the complexities of modern life.  Magyar will talk about his work as a photographer and filmmaker “who uses high-tech digital tools and cameras adapted from industrial applications to examine the human ‘factory’” in a free discussion. This will be a fun session of creating thrown and altered stoneware bowls which will be glazed and fired by volunteers at AKstudios. The studio has 8 Wheels and plenty of room to facilitate all of the activities. All Materials are to be provided along with snacks and beverages. Anyone who is interested in participating should contact Allen to sign up. Once the bowls are finished they will be donated to the empty bowls event, hosted by the Berea Kiwanis at Berea High school. Of course, if you are unable to attend, donations of finished bowls would also be welcome and can be dropped off at the studio. The proceeds from this event help fund programs and provide resources to Church Street Ministries, Berea Welfare and SCAN. This unique, 2nd annual exhibition is curated by Cleveland State University’s Gallery Director Robert Thurmer. For this exhibition, Thurmer selected six artists to share the gallery for a month as a common workspace.  This year’s six artists are Mallorie Freeman, Stephanie Maniaci, Eileen Matias, Debra Purcell, Thom Rossino and Stephanie Streeter.  Each artist will meet every Sunday afternoon from 12-5pm at CWAL to work in this communal studio.  This Friday is an open studio night for the public to experience this creative environment as the artists get started.  On Fri 4/19 the public is invited back to experience a DIY exhibition of all work created during the month at CWAL.

Two new exhibits opening @ MOCA:  1 – Kate Gilmore – Body of Work.  Gilmore’s performance-based shows are “messy, chaotic, and excessive.” In her work, she undertakes strenuous activities wearing distinctly feminine attire, appearing laughable but ulitmately doomed to fail. Her work challenges stereotypes and reassess hardcore feminist practices.  Attend an Artist Conversation w/ Kate Gilmore and MOCA Chief Curator David Norrwill on Sat 3/16 at 1pm.  2 – Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller – The Paradise Institute.  Get immersed in a simulated environment. Enter an unassuming plywood structure and find yourself in what appears to be a 1930s-style movie house, complete with plush velvet seating. Hear strange sounds and watch a mysterious narrative unfold on the screen.

“Frank Green Memorial at the Beachland.”  3pm. Performance artist, art critic and AIDS activist Frank Green swashbuckled his way through the Cleveland art scene in the ’90s. The Parma Heights native decamped for New York City where he spent the ’80s embroiled in the city’s art scene.  Returning to Cleveland, he developed numerous performance pieces, many of which dealt with his HIV positive diagnosis. He resisted treatment, becoming a voice in the movement to discredit accepted ideas about HIV and AIDS, until he finally became sick in the late ’90s. Even while his health declined and he went into assisted living, he was a familiar figure at art openings and Beachland concerts.  Last month, the Tremont Art Walk featured a display of his work at the offices of Tremont West Inc. This afternoon friends, acquaintances and admirers pay tribute at a memorial event at the Beachland Ballroom.
