Liz Maugans, co-founder and executive director of Zygote Press, has created a new project titled The Artist’s Trust: A Portrait of the Artist in Cuyahoga County. It’s part of MOCA Cleveland’s summer exhibition Constant as the Sun, which will open Fri 6/2 and run through Sun 9/17.  She’s calling for all interested Cuyahoga County artists 18 and over to submit a self-portrait in any medium. All that’s required is that you self-identify as an artist. The portrait must fit on an 8.5” x 11” vertical paper or board and fit into a 9” x 12” envelope.

Waterloo Arts, 15605 Waterloo Rd., CLE 216.692.9500 artscollinwood.org  “Artists Books and Panel Discussion.”  3PM.  One of the many manifestations of this year’s Cuban artist exchange spearheaded by the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion program is a collaboration with Collective Arts Network, Literary Cleveland and Waterloo Arts. Artist books from a small artisanal press Ediciones Vigia in Mantanzas, Cuba, are currently of display at Waterloo Arts in From the San Juan to the Cuyahoga: Artist Books of Ediciones Vigia.
Today Waterloo Arts is hosting a panel about artist-designed small press books. It will include writer Laura Ruíz Montes, editor of Ediciones Vigia, local collaborator Damaris Puñales Alpizar of Case Western Reserve University, CAN Journal editor Michael Gill and Cleveland small press publisher RA Washington. The discussion will be in English and Spanish. The books will be on view during the panel and remain on view through 5/19. It’s free and open to all.

Waterloo Arts, 15605 Waterloo Rd., CLE 216.692.9500 artscollinwood.org  “Walk All Over Waterloo.”  Open 5-10pm.  The Satellite Gallery, located in that weird silver house on E. 156th just off Waterloo, is, appropriately, taking a look at the great outdoors with Natural Environments: Serene, Wild, & Growing. Cimira Crews, Joshua Harris, Iman Harrison, Ashley Jones, Dante Player, Imari Rivers, Christine Chapman-Sung, Daila Wilson and Serenity Wyatt from the Center for Inspired Learning, and their leader, Carmen Romine, created a biosphere from repurposed materials at Satellite Gallery. In addition, “artstronauts” John Guarnieri, Allyn Rosser and Nicolae Sadovnic have created installations for the show. See them from 5-9pm.  Stop in Waterloo Arts from 5-9pm for the grand opening of From San Juan to the Cuyahoga. It features intricate artist books made from recycled materials representing the small literary press scenes in Matanzas, Cuba, and Cleveland.  Praxis Fiber Workshop’s gallery will be debuting work by four artists from outside Cleveland in Round 2_Centrifugal, with a reception from 6-9pm. The work of Naomi Clark, Eliza Fernand, Karolina Gnatowski and John Paul Morabito includes hand and jacquard weaving, painted soft sculptures, video, and quilt and fabric installation.  You’ll want to stop in at Maria Neil Art Project — make it your last stop because these party animals are open until 10 — for the closing of Paul Sydorenko’s 366 Days of Skulls, featuring a year’s worth of work in which the artist drew skulls every day.

Cleveland Print Room, 2550 Superior Ave, Suite 102, CLE 216.401.5981 “Experiment in Progress.”  Opening 5-9PM.  Early 20th century physician, professor and author Dr. Smith Ely Jelliffe created a series of glass slides for use in his lectures about mental health, neurology, and psychiatry. Among Smith’s images are photographs of hospitals, patients, x-rays, diagrams, and artwork by patients.  This exhibition features over 15 artists and musicians responding to the recent show of Dr. Jelliffe’s images, which will be available for viewing on an iPad in the gallery. Featured in the show are works and performances from Laura Ruth Bidwell, John W Carlson, Hadley K Conner, Jeff Curtis, Robert Darkmatter, Yael Eban, Elizabeth Emery, Bianca Fields, Hilary Gent, Stephan Haluska, Jacob Koestler, Greg Martin, Liz Maugans, Deborah Pinter, Melinda Placko, Steven Standley, Arnold Tunstall, Rebekah Wilhelm and Justin Woody.  The reception features live music and performances between 7:30 and 8:30. It’s free.

Briggs, Jason (b. 1972, Wausau, WI, lives in The Black Hills, SD).  After getting his MFA degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Jason served three years as artist in residence at the Appalachian Center for Crafts in Smithville, TN. From 1999-2012 he ran the Ceramics department for Belmont University in Nashville, learning first-hand what it means to be adjunct labor.   Jason and his wife maintain a studio, a 2 kids and a few bad habits.  Recently, Jason showed work in the Illustrative Festival at the Direktorenhaus Museum in Berlin, and had work traveling the US in “InCiteful Clay”— a Judith Schwartz-curated exhibition.
