Canton Museum of Art, 1001 Market Ave., N  Canton, Oh 330.453.7666. www.cantonart.org  “Beyond Craft Opening Night Party.”  6-9pm. BEYOND CRAFT:  Decorative Arts from the Beatrice S. & Melvin B. Eagle Collection This exhibit features 85 objects by 50 artists – ceramics, fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry and works on paper – acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.   Some of the artists included are:  Olga deAmaral, Robert Arneson, Viola Frey, Sam Maloof, Richard Marquis, Albert Paley, Ken Price, Peter Voulkos, Paul Soldner…to just name a few.  The Eagle Collection highlights important studio objects made from the mid- 1960s to the 2000s with a focus on the 1960s – 80s, the collection’s great strength. 

Cleveland State University Art Gallery, 1307 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, 216.687.2103, www.csuohio.edu/artgallery  “Unending Journeys.”  Open 4-8pm. 4:00 p.m .Gallery Conversation with Christopher Richards, Curator at ARTneo and Mindy Tousley, Executive Director at AAWR.  5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Opening Reception.  Join the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve and ARTneo as we partner with the Galleries at Cleveland State University for a retrospective of works by Samuel Butnik. The exhibition consists of works from the collections of AAWR and ARTneo, emphasizing Butnik's ability to capture the feeling of the landscape throughout his career in a variety of styles. From his early landscapes painted during World War II, to his sketches from his European travels and his large abstract canvases, Butnik referenced both physical journeys as well as psychological and transcendental explorations. Samuel Butnik's work was, in his own words, a “realization of new experiences.”
